Introduction

This seminar aims to provide an overview of the planning system in Northern Ireland, with a particular focus on the planning process and recent planning decisions.

The following points will be addressed:

  • The planning process in Northern Ireland;
  • Statutory framework
  • The role of Councils and the Department for Infrastructure;
  • Recent notable planning judgments; and
  • Enforcement.

Speakers

Orla Kelly and Deirdre StJohn are solicitors at A&L Goodbody. They specialise in planning and environmental matters and regularly advise both public and private sector clients across the energy, manufacturing, retail, investment and waste sectors. They have represented developers and objectors in both contentious and non-contentious matters and have represented clients before the Planning Appeals Commission and in judicial review proceedings in Northern Ireland. They regularly advise clients seeking planning permission for large scale developments and, together with colleagues on the Commercial Property team, draft and negotiate Section 76 Agreements on their behalf. A&L Goodbody have acted for three of the major Councils in Northern Ireland on planning matters.
