National Minimum Wage increases from 1 April 2018

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) rates are increasing from 1 April 2018.

The industry wage rates set by the Joint Council for the Building & Civil Engineering Industry (Northern Ireland) remain greater than the increased NMW with the exception of a new entrant aged 25 and over. In this scenario the new entrant should be paid the NLW of £7.83 per hour from 1 April 2018.

In the majority of cases the industry wage rates for apprentices also exceed the NMW. However if the National Minimum Wage/National Living Wage is higher than the agreed wage rate then the NMW/NLW rate applies. From 1 April 2018 this will apply to apprentices in the “after 12 months” category depending on their age.
